It’s that time of year in Tennessee – hot, humid, and a chance of afternoon pop up thunderstorms nearly everyday. Today the temp was 101 degrees by one store marquee I passed at 5:04. I ran a few errand and when I came out of the store I saw today’s photo. The wind was blowing pretty hard – and felt very nice! The temp had dropped to 88 in less than an hour. It never rained where I was, but with the way this cloud looks, I’m sure it did somewhere.

Despite the 100 degree heat index I still did a bit of yard work today. In addition to the pesky mosquitoes, there seemed to be a lot of different kinds of bugs out. I think this dragonfly was watching me. He seemed to be following me around the house.

Today I participated in Photos for the Flood, a fund raiser organized by Nashville photographer Sarah B. Gilliam. The Pied Piper Creamery, voted the best ice cream in Nashville, allowed us to use space at their store. Today also happened to be the day summer decided to invade with high’s in the area near 90 degrees. Needless to say, the Pied Piper was extremely busy helping keep people cool with their delicious treats. I snapped this shot when this little girl stood on a stool at the ice cream counter to pick out what flavor of ice cream she wanted. I thought the look she was giving her mom was so cute. She was probably having a hard time deciding because there were so many choices.

Not something in flight, but something that was once in flight. This is a sun dial at a local park. It is made from the tail sections of two jets. I used to know what kind of jets, other than big ones, but I forgot.
It’s really a bit strange to look at because you can’t tell it’s a sun dial from the main road that passes behind it. I guess it’s “modern art”….it’s definitely different. As you can tell from the clouds we were about to have another storm. I just made it back to the car before the rain started.

When the water receded the cleanup began. This isn’t the dump….it’s some of the debris from one house that was flooded two weeks ago in the worst flood in Nashville’s recorded history. 13 inches of rain fell in two days causing the area rivers to rise as much as 13 feet above flood stage. This is the sight on many streets and some entire neighborhoods around Nashville. Several houses on one side of this street were flooded. All are in the process of cleaning up, making repairs, and getting on with life. From the road, you can see construction dumpsters filled to overflowing behind these houses. On the roadside, awaiting pickup by the garbage trucks, are the remnants of people’s lives.
I’m proud to live in the Nashville area. People here pull together and get things done, even when faced with disaster. Neighbors helping neighbors, doing whatever it takes. That’s the way we do it here.

A line of storms moved in today. Lots of thunder and lightning and as much as two inches of rain in some areas. We haven’t dried out from the flooding two weeks ago yet, so there was flash flooding in some places.
