I took two of my granddaughters to feed the ducks. I don’t know what kind this one is, but he seemed to be the “leader of the flock”. He seem to be ordering the other ducks around, but didn’t try to take the bread from them. I thought he had character because he was so different from the rest.

My three year old granddaughter, the youngest of the four, wanted to water the flowers. Her mom had given the ok and she was patiently watching the water run out of the hose. I decided to “help” her a little and teach her how to spray the water. I showed her using my thumb over the end of the hose. Of course her thumb is hardly big enough so she ended up using her entire hand. And do you remember when a drink from the hose on a hot summer day was a treat?
As you can tell, she watered herself as much as the flowers!

As most of you know by now, Nashville had record breaking rain this weekend and is now suffering the worst flood in recorded history of the city. The Cumberland River has crested at just under 52 feet. Flood stage is 40 feet. I live close to Stones River and the J. Percy Priest Dam. I went there and took photos after work. I’ve never seen it so high. I took some photos around the dam back in January, so I pulled some of those to post for comparison. Thankfully my house is on a hill and is undamanged. Lots of people aren’t as fortunate. The big scare now is fresh water. One of our two water treatment plants is flooded and inoperable, so everyond has been asked to conserve water. Glad I have plenty of bottled water! Now for the photos…..

Nashville Shores Water Park underwater May 3, 2010

Lake side of the dam in January. There are benches and walkways.

The benches and walkways are underwater. This was made from the parking lot. There is a long stairway down to the area with the benches. About half of it is underwater.

Not a great photo, but notice the access walkway with the railing on the right near the top. I would estimate it is at least 15 feet to the water.

From the I-40 bridge you can see the water is almost up to the access walkway. It's the white strip right at the water under the Corp of Engineers sign.

This tree is in the area where the benches and walkways are. The lake is usually about 30 feet past this tree.

Same tree under water.

Right now the entire parking lot and the bank are under water.

Both lower sides usually look like the previous photo of the bank with all the rocks. This is what it looked like today.

The I-40 bridge over the Stones River from the top of J. Percy Priest dam. The river is usually between the columns on the bridge.

Another shot of the lake side of the dam. The Corp of Engineers has scheduled a controled release of water tonight. If none is released, the water will go over the top during the night. If too much water is released too quickly, it will make the flooding in downtown Nashville even worse because Stones River feeds into the Cumberland.

Here’s what it looks like at my house. Thankfully I’m on a hill. Some of my neighbors aren’t so lucky. The storm drains on the lower area of the subdivision are overflowing and the houses near them are being floodded. Several water rescues today where people have tried to cross water covering roads. The Cumberland River (goes through downtown Nashville) was at 38 feet this morning. It is at 45 feet now. 40 feet is flood stage. This is very unusual for Nashville. The bad thing is the rain is supposed to keep up for another 8 – 12 hours. It might look bad where I am but others around town have it much worse. You can see more on one of the local news web sites here.
The water comes down the hill …..

To the backyard…..

Then around to the side yard….

Then across the driveway and into the road…..

The people that live next to the storm drains aren’t so lucky….
The storm drain is probably 4 feet deep and as you can see was over flowing at 9:00 this morning.

We’ve had very unusual weather in Tennessee today. Over 6 inches of rain has fallen in the Nashville area since this morning. There have been tornados to the west and south. We experienced the worst flooding in this area in the last 30 years. The news reported several places where the interstate was flooded and completely closed. The rain has let up for the moment, but round two is on the way. Thankfully I didn’t have to get out for anything today.
My power went out for a while and I had to eat dinner by candlelight….which resulted in today’s photo. Of course the power came back on just as I finished. In a way it was nice. No noise except the birds singing when the rain let up for a bit. I’m glad to have my cable and DSL back though!

I’m playing catch up on blog posts after having my granddaughters for the weekend. We had a great time!
We’ve had another dreary, rainy spell the last few days. At least it’s spring rain and not so cold! I shot this on the way to work. Too bad I didn’t have it for last week’s Theme Thursday for bokeh. I like the mood of the blurry lights and the raindrops.
