Here’s what it looks like at my house. Thankfully I’m on a hill. Some of my neighbors aren’t so lucky. The storm drains on the lower area of the subdivision are overflowing and the houses near them are being floodded. Several water rescues today where people have tried to cross water covering roads. The Cumberland River (goes through downtown Nashville) was at 38 feet this morning. It is at 45 feet now. 40 feet is flood stage. This is very unusual for Nashville. The bad thing is the rain is supposed to keep up for another 8 – 12 hours. It might look bad where I am but others around town have it much worse. You can see more on one of the local news web sites here.
The water comes down the hill …..

To the backyard…..

Then around to the side yard….

Then across the driveway and into the road…..

The people that live next to the storm drains aren’t so lucky….
The storm drain is probably 4 feet deep and as you can see was over flowing at 9:00 this morning.

We’ve had very unusual weather in Tennessee today. Over 6 inches of rain has fallen in the Nashville area since this morning. There have been tornados to the west and south. We experienced the worst flooding in this area in the last 30 years. The news reported several places where the interstate was flooded and completely closed. The rain has let up for the moment, but round two is on the way. Thankfully I didn’t have to get out for anything today.
My power went out for a while and I had to eat dinner by candlelight….which resulted in today’s photo. Of course the power came back on just as I finished. In a way it was nice. No noise except the birds singing when the rain let up for a bit. I’m glad to have my cable and DSL back though!

I pulled some weeds out of my flower bed this evening. I think the squirrels forgot about some of the acorns they hid. I pulled up over 20 oak tree “sprouts”. I found a few things I didn’t expect that were perfect for some macro shots. One was half of a robin’s egg. There was no sign of the other half and I have no idea where the nest might be. The other was a small patch of tiny mushrooms. I’m glad none of the neighbors saw me laying on the ground getting the shots of the mushrooms!

Today we had the most severe storms so far this spring. It doesn’t get as bad here as it does in other states, but it seems in the last few years we have had more tornados and damaging winds. I got a few shots of some really neat clouds in between the lines of storms. We had several instances of hard rain – to the point my backyard looked like a small lake with lots of splashing!

My azalea is full of blooms – bright pink ones. I only have one and it’s the only thing pink in the flower bed.

The blooms on more of my irises have opened up. We’re supposed to be getting some bad storms the next couple of days. I hope the hard rain doesn’t beat down the blooms. I love it when a bunch are open at the same time. I have a neighbor with a big bed of irises that haven’t bloomed yet but will be any day. Can’t wait to see what they look like. Wonder if they’ll be pretty as mine?
