The sun was out today. I loved the way it sparkled on the snow. The snow looked like someone had spilled glitter all over it. The temp got above freezing, so some of the snow and ice started to melt, only to refreeze after it started getting dark. Two photos today – the sun on the snow (I think I’ve got the hang of sun flare) and a close up of the snow showing the refracted light in rainbow colors. I didn’t realize until I zoomed in that the sun sparkles on the snow looked like stars too! Nice little surprise in the details.

More photos from the snowy South! We got snow, then a sleet and snow mix last night, so it looks like snow but is crunchy when you walk on it. About 4 to 5 inches accumulation where I live. I couldn’t pick just one photo again today….Here’s one of the ice on my mailbox. Notice it’s on the front from the blowing wind – put a layer of this on the road and you are in for an adventure! There is also snow on the top of the mailbox and ice about a third of the way down each side. The second is of a bunch of acorn hulls on the snow. I guess the squirrels remembered where they buried the emergency supplies. The third is icicles hanging of the corner of the house – you could put an eye out with one of these if it fell off!

The south is experiencing a major winter storm. It started as snow early this morning, then turned to a sleet and snow mix just before dark. It’s supposed to continue through tomorrow. This is the type of weather that paralyzes the south. We end up with ice on the roads – and no one can drive on the ice! Thankfully, I don’t have to go out all weekend. It should warm up by Monday so the roads will clear just in time to go back to work.
Of course I got outside and took a lot of photos. It might be another five years before I get a chance to photograph snow again – and then again I may have another chance tomorrow! Here’s a few of my favorites. The first is my backyard bird feeder full of snow. The second is a shot of some small branches in the snow taken almost at ground level. The third is from my front porch with flash – I was trying to capture the sleet/snow mix as it was falling. Without the flash it was hard to see. With the mix falling now I wonder if I’ll have ice shots to take tomorrow. I hope not – I have too many big trees really close to the house!

I had an idea for this Thursday’s theme - darkness - and the weather cooperated. Even though it wasn’t quite dark, it was pretty close and the moon was almost full. I have tried for years to get a shot like this and thanks to what I’ve learned in the last couple of months I finally did it. Tonight I shot RAW. Even though I initially overexposed the shot a bit, leaving little detail in the moon, I was able to adjust it Lightroom and bring the details back. I’m know there’s still room for improvement but I’m happy with the best moon shot I’ve ever gotten. So to fit with today’s theme, a shot of the almost full moon just before total darkness fell.

The sun finally came out today. It has been so gloomy and dreay the last two weeks. It was so nice to see blue sky. It looks so nice through the limbs of the huge trees in my neighborhood. These trees have been around so long they have a character of their own. Truly majestic, even without leaves. Bad weather is on the way again, but the blue skies today were beautiful!

It was another long day at work and another gloomy day outside. I took my point and shoot with me and took some shots of random things around the office. The first is the reflection of the elevator lights in the brushed metal door. I thought it made a nice abstract. The second it my trackball – if you look closely you can see me in it. The third is a cappucino from our fancy coffee maker – it helped keep me awake until time to go home. Maybe tomorrow will be brighter.
